The presentation of the HR Explore Award 2021, organized by Voka Antwerpen-Waasland, took place on November 16, 2021. The award rewards the Antwerp-Wase company with the most commendable HR achievement of the past two years.

A healthy mind in a healthy body
CEO Bart Van Zele explains: "'Mens sana in corpore sano'. Juvenalis already knew this almost 2000 years ago, but the difference between theory and practice is sometimes big and motivation sometimes small. With this sporty experiment I try to contribute to the famous motto. Colleagues who are looking for a good work-life balance, a balanced life with sufficient exercise and sport, are stimulated by this."
Game rules
Sports is a broad concept: cycling, swimming, running, squash, fitness, but also walking are eligible. "There is no value judgment about the type of sport. Colleagues have to use their common sense, but darts and shopping on the Meir are unfortunately not eligible. The most important thing is that you are consciously moving," says Bart.
There are hardly any other rules of the game, except for a maximum number of hours that each colleague can collect.
No control
Keeping track of sporting performance is done with an activity tracker that is available to anyone who wants it. But it only serves to know for yourself how long and intensively you have been exercising. It is not a means of control. "Our corporate culture is very open and based on trust. There should be no control mechanism in that."
For everyone
The initiative lends itself to be applied in any organization, small or large. Anyone can participate and no one is excluded. "In recent months I have noticed that many fellow entrepreneurs are adopting this idea and that is of course great. I hope it will be followed by many more", Bart concludes.

Een gezonde geest in een gezond lichaam
CEO Bart Van Zele licht toe: "'Mens sana in corpore sano'. Juvenalis wist het een kleine 2000 jaar geleden al, maar het verschil tussen theorie en praktijk is soms groot en de motivatie soms klein. Met dit sportief experiment probeer ik een steentje bij te dragen aan de befaamde spreuk. Collega’s die op zoek zijn naar een goede work-life balance, een evenwichtig leven met voldoende beweging en sport, worden hierdoor gestimuleerd."
Spelregels
Sporten is trouwens een ruim begrip: fietsen, zwemmen, lopen, squash, fitness, maar ook wandelen komen in aanmerking. "Er is geen waardeoordeel over het type sport. De collega’s moeten hun gezond verstand gebruiken maar darts en shoppen op de Meir komen helaas niet in aanmerking. Het belangrijkste is dat je bewust in beweging bent", aldus Bart.
Andere spelregels zijn er nauwelijks, behalve een maximum aantal uren dat iedere collega kan verzamelen.
Geen controle
Het bijhouden van sportieve prestaties gebeurt met een activity tracker die iedereen die dat wilt ter beschikking krijgt. Maar die dient enkel om voor jezelf te weten hoe lang en intensief je hebt gesport. Het is geen controlemiddel. "Onze bedrijfscultuur is heel open en gebaseerd op vertrouwen. Daar hoort geen controlemechanisme in thuis."
Voor iedereen
Het initiatief leent er zich toe om in elke organisatie, klein of groot, toe te passen. Iedereen kan er aan deelnemen en er wordt niemand uitgesloten. "Ik heb de afgelopen maanden gemerkt dat veel collega-ondernemers dit idee overnemen en dat is natuurlijk geweldig. Ik hoop dat het nog veel navolging zal krijgen", besluit Bart.
