torii

1. About Torii

a. Background Torii

A torii (鳥居, also: 鳥栖; 鶏栖) [1] literally means: bird perch. The torii is said to symbolize a stick on which a rooster would crow to call upon the sun. Walking under the torii is said to mean leaving the realm of night and entering the realm of light. It is a traditional Japanese gate that usually provides access to a Shintō shrine (jinja). The torii are seen as the spatial transition from the profane (the 'ordinary' world) to the sacred. They are characteristic of Shintō shrines.

b. Mission

Torii wants to be a special place where you can meet in a semi-homely environment in comfort and serenity with attention to a healthy mind in a healthy body. In this way you can meet in a lucid and inspiring way and come to balanced decision-making processes.

c. Vision

Just as a traditional Torii forms a gateway from the profane to the sacred, from night to day, we want to form a transition from the ordinary to the extraordinary. We believe that people can come to balanced and sustainable decisions in a healthy and inspiring environment.

We are ecologists through and through. The house is completely driven by ecological

processes. The house is heated by a geothermal heat pump that works on solar energy. Fresh and clean air is constantly supplied via a type D ventilation system. The hot water is partly created by a solar boiler. Rainwater is recycled in the toilets. The garden is maintained with ecological processes.

d. Nature

Meeting place Torii is surrounded by nature (located opposite the Golf Van Duisburg, 250 m from the park of Tervuren and 350 from the Arboretum and Sonian Forest. Nature is important and provides a serene and inspiring setting. In a few minutes you are in the middle of the park or the arboretum to have inspiring conversations. You can also follow golf initiations or just play a round of golf.

e. History

Art and culture are also important. Tervuren was the domain of the Dukes of Brabant and later the hunting domain of Charles of Lorraine. He had a wall built around the park (the Warande). There are 12 entrance gates. Near Torii there are three entrance gates that provide access to the park. The horses of William of Orange once grazed on the site where Torii is located. King Leopold II also had the Africa Museum and Colonial Palace built there at the beginning of the twentieth century.

f. Art

In Tervuren the School of Tervuren was established with painting that is related to the enpleinairism in France with the School of Barbizon and later the impressionists from the 19th century. Painters such as Hippolyte Boulenger, Joseph Coosemans, Lucien Franck stayed here and painted their masterpieces here. Tervuren still breathes this atmosphere today and a new museum is being developed on the old barracks of Panquin in which this painting is exhibited. But visual artists from the twentieth century also created important work here such as Christian Dotremont (Cobra) and Somville. Finally, the house of Henri Van de Velde is also located here (La Nouvelle Maison).

But there is also a contemporary interpretation. The owner is a photographer and visual artist. The entire house is decorated with photos from the area according to thematic series (The greenhouses of the Druivenstreek, Tervuren Nocturnes - night shots of the icons from Tervuren, Tervuren 4 x 4 - the Nature of Tervuren according to the 4 seasons, the 4 cardinal directions, the 4 municipalities and the 4 elements) and other contemporary and traditional work from Africa, which creates a link with the Africa Museum.

g. Sports

Torii is an excellent base for sports in the immediate vicinity. The Blue Lions sports centre is nearby, as is the Golf of Duisburg. Tennis and paddle can be played. In the arboretum, Sonian Forest or Tervuren park you can go on cycling or walking tours.
