Kloosterstraat40
- Kloosterstraat 40, 9620 Zottegem, Belgium
Kloosterstraat40 is a building with a rich history. In 1906, a monastery was under construction. The Dominican Sisters of Zottegem made it their main monastery two years later. The popular interpretation of their name, 'domini canes' or 'faithful four-legged friends of the lord', is present in the bas-relief on the street facade. The sisters brought the whole to prosperity. As early as 1907, there was talk of a primary school.
An orphanage was established, later a boarding school. After World War II, the Sisters established a colony for weak children. Erwetegem reached its peak around 1960. After that, Flanders gradually became prosperous and the government transformed charity into welfare work. Monastic life lost its appeal. In 1991, vzw Den Boomgaard took over the building and its activities. Of all the vibrant young life from the past, our neighbours still remain: the CKG Zonneheuvel.
Another wing of this site houses services of the OCMW Zottegem, vzw Kind en Preventie, Kind & Gezin and CAW Aalst. In addition to the existing CKG, this will continue to build a 'House of the Child', the toy library, after-school care, a consultation office for young children, pedagogical advice, family mediation and a nap class.
The former monastery itself was restored and transformed into a centre for education and training. In this capacity, it now houses numerous organisations that conduct all or part of their training courses here or occasionally use our facilities.
You can come to us for simple accommodation, with or without breakfast, but also for baby showers, communion or spring celebrations, funeral meals or other small-scale family celebrations (up to 60 people) and meetings, courses or information evenings, ...
The unique building with its rich history, original decoration, simple but comfortable rooms and fully equipped meeting rooms can be used for many purposes. That is why we like to work tailor-made. Interested? Let us know what your plans are, we will let you know what we can do for you!
'If you like the charm of an old lady smiling at you, you will love it here'
In Kloosterstraat40 you can find simple accommodation in the authentic setting of a former monastery.

Neighborhood/in the neighborhood
'Zottegem, Egmont city and Gateway to the Flemish Ardennes'
'Zottegem, cycling city & walking paradise'
'Zottegem, the little Loire'
Count Lamoraal van Egmont is part of our country's history. The man was beheaded in 1568, together with the Count of Hoorn, by the Spanish on the Grote Markt in Brussels for treason and his alleged resistance to Spanish rule.
Zottegem cherishes the story of this unfortunate count and his connection with our city. In the former town hall on the market, you can visit a small but fine Egmont room on the first floor, which tells you the history of Egmont. In the council chamber of the town hall hangs a beautiful painting that shows the beheading of both counts. You can also see the cervical vertebra of Egmont.
Opposite the former town hall, which now serves as an Information Point for Tourism and a Centre for Regional History, you will find the Deanery Church, which since 2017 has been embellished with a modern glass dome that provides access to the burial vault of Egmont and his wife Sabina Van Beieren.
And the municipal library is located in the beautifully renovated castle, which was the country residence of the Lamoral Count of Egmont and his family. The garden of the castle is often the setting for numerous festivities, especially in the summer, such as the weekly park concerts, Jazz Zottegem or the Open Play Day.
Zottegem is part of 'The little Loire'. With many castles nearby, there are many beautiful buildings and beautiful gardens to discover. For example, there is the Domain Breyvelde, which houses a good restaurant or the Castle of Leeuwergem with its unique lover theater, definitely worth a visit.
The Archeocentrum Velzeke (AVE) is one of the most beautiful and prominent Gallo-Roman museums in our country and is mainly known for its presentation of daily life in Roman times. The museum, which was completely renovated in 2017 with a new wing, provides a nice overview of a much broader time period. The museum is also worth a visit with children. Thanks to the clothing project, they can feel like a real Roman, even if only for a short while.
For those who like to stroll in and around the city, we would like to draw attention to the rich Art Deco and Art Nouveau buildings that our city is rich in. They date from the heyday of the city in the textile industry.
The Folklore Museum shows the times of yesteryear, for those who enjoy a bit of nostalgia.
Zottegem is a city that loves to party. From carnival to summer bars, from funfair to cycling, from small-scale open-air concerts to a weekly programme of the cream of Belgian artists in the Cultural Centre. For activities during your stay, you can always obtain information at the reception.
In the area/Nature and sports
The Flemish Ardennes, at the foot of which you will be staying with us, have a lot to offer. The region is of course known to cyclists, who can not only visit the legendary Paddestraat and Berendries, but also have the Wall of Geraardsbergen within cycling distance, as well as the Centre Tour of Flanders in nearby Oudenaarde.
But we also have the very best for walkers. It is not without reason that our region was renamed Wandelwalhalla by Toerisme Oost-Vlaanderen. With the newly created walking junction networks Bronbossen and Zwalmvallei you can walk through one of the most beautiful regions of the country.
During your bike or walk you can enjoy many delicious regional products along the way. For example, there is the beer bike route that takes you past several beautiful local breweries. But also coffee & tea lovers can indulge themselves along the way with a pit stop at 'Mrs Panamarenko' who runs her family's coffee roastery in an artistic way with great care for the craft of her grandfather & father.
