1 Dead and at Least 17 Injured in Sandstorm at Spanish Festival: Decor Moves Through the Air

A person has been killed at a music festival on Spain's Mediterranean coast near Valencia when severe gusts of wind dislodged part of the stage. Spanish media reported this on Saturday morning. Seventeen people were also injured, some seriously, according to Spain's Europa Press news agency. Police have not confirmed the numbers.

The multi-day festival on Cullera beach was unexpectedly hit by a sandstorm. Spanish media reports of gusts of wind up to 65 kilometers. Three of the injured are in serious condition, the rest sustained minor injuries. The Spanish emergency services report that the victims have been taken to different hospitals.

Video footage shows visitors to the 2022 Medusa Electronic Dance Music Festival on Cullera Beach, south of Valencia, trying to escape the storm. Parts of the huge backdrop had been torn off and flying through the air, a sandstorm obscuring the view.

The organization has currently suspended the event. Medusa started Wednesday and would last until Monday. The Spanish newspaper El País reports that a total of about 320,000 visitors were expected.
